BLAZE
BARBEQUE GRILLS AND PORTABLE FIREPLACE USE RESTRICTIONS

The Fire Department continues to receive questions regarding the allowable use and storage of barbeque grills at apartment and condo buildings.  The section of the fire code, adopted under Local Ordinance No. 108, dealing specifically with this subject is section 308.3.1 “Open Flame Cooking Devices” located on page 29 of the International Fire Code (IFC, 2006).  This section prohibits the use of charcoal burners, and other open flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within ten (10) feet of combustible construction.  This requirement does not apply to one or two family dwellings (individual home or duplex), or where buildings, decks, and balconies are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.

Please note that apartment and condo complexes may adopt their own association rules with regard to grills, open flame cooking devices, and portable fireplaces that are more stringent than the local fire code.  The fire code is considered a minimum standard for safety.

Don’t let this happen to your home, keep grills and portable fireplaces away from buildings!
