Full Time Firefighter / Paramedic 

About Us

The Washington Township Fire Department provides full-service fire and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to the Charter Township, including Stony Creek Metro Park. Our present workforce consists of 33 highly trained and competent Officers, and Firefighters who are all licensed as Paramedics to provide emergency medical services (EMS) for a fire-based advanced life support transporting ambulance service.  Additional staff positions consist of the Fire Chief, a Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal and Privacy Officer working a Monday through Friday work schedule.  On-duty staffing is accomplished through three shifts/platoons, working 24 hours on a rotating basis, from three fire stations.  Leadership of each on-duty shift is provided by a Captain and two Lieutenants.  The remaining crew members are highly proficient firefighters/apparatus operators.  All career members are trained and qualified as Interior Structural Firefighters (FFII) and trained for an all hazard response to natural and man-made disasters.

Lateral Transfers

Lateral Transfers will be allowed during the collective terms of this bargaining agreement provided the candidate is currently employed as a full time IAFF fire department member (Firefighter/Paramedic). 

  • Employee may start higher in the wage scale if they have more than 1-year experience and move laterally into that scale
  • Employee may start higher in the wage scale if they have more than 2-year experience and move laterally into that scale
  • Employee may start higher in the wage scale if they have more than 3-year experience and move laterally into that scale

The employee may start at a lower scale as well, at the discretion of the Fire Chief based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the candidate. 

Holidays

All Employees shall be compensated for eight (8) holidays at their base pay for a twenty-four (24) hour day. Holiday pay shall be paid in a lump sum with the first payroll check following the Employee’s anniversary hire date. Holiday pay shall be prorated on a monthly basis for Employees not employed for a full year.

If an Employee takes less than the full amount of vacation to which he/she is entitled, he/she will be paid one-hundred percent (100%) of all of their unused vacation hours in a lump sum with the first payroll check following the Employee’s anniversary hire date.

Personal Leave

Employees may earn eight (8) hours of personal leave per month, which may be used for any reason, but in no event shall an Employee accumulate more than ninety-six (96) hours personal leave at any time.

Sick Leave 
Current full-time Employees shall accrue one (1) day per month (twelve, 12 days per year) paid sick leave. An Employee may accumulate not more than forty-eight (48) paid sick leave days, and not more than two hundred (200) paid sick leave days for forty (40) hour Employees.

Medical Insurance

Employees are entitled to receive the current medical, dental and vision plans (“Current Plans”) provided by Employer as of the effective date of this Agreement at no cost to Employees. The Current Plans are:
(1) The Medical Insurance Plan provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield
(BCBS). The coverage is the Simply Blue PPO HSA LG with Rx. (Benefit
Summary Exhibit 1)
(2) The Dental Plan is Standard Insurance Company Group Dental Plan –
Policy No. 751126. (Benefit Summary Exhibit 2)
(3) The Vision Plan is BCBS CID #158023 (Benefit Summary Exhibit 3).

Health Care Savings Account / Post Retirement Healthcare

All full-time, active Employees shall be entitled to participate in the Township’s Health Care Savings Account (“HCSA”). Those Employees who are Medicare-eligible as of April 1, 2009 shall not be entitled to participate in the HCSA program. Employees must commit to contribute a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $1,000.00 per pay to participate in the ongoing HCSA program and to receive the Township’s 2% contribution. The Township shall contribute monthly two (2%) percent of the Employee’s monthly base salary to the HCSA.

Upon attaining the age of 50 and 10 years of service with the Township, an Employee will be eligible to purchase Township medical insurance in the Township’s retiree medical division (BCSM HDHP SB 6350 division 002). The Employee will be eligible to receive either a lump sum cash payment or installment payments at the Employee’s election. The amount of the Employer’s payment will be calculated by multiplying the number of years of service as a Township Employee times $2,750 (No. of years of service x $2,750 = maximum Employer contribution).

Pension - Defined Contribution

Effective April 1, 2023, Employer will contribute 15% of an Employee’s gross wages as defined below to the plan for each year of the CBA. For purposes of calculating pension contributions, gross wages shall not include overtime pay or pay received by bargaining unit members for FLSA. In addition to the Employer’s 15% annual contribution, the following will apply for each year of the CBA:
Year 1 Employer will match 2% if the Employee contributes 2%. 
Year 2 Employer will match 3% if the Employee contributes 3%.
Year 3 Employer will match 4% if the Employee contributes 4%.
Year 4 Employer will match 5% if the Employee contributes 5%.
Year 5 Employer will match 5% if the Employee contributes 5%.

Food Allowance

Each full-time Employee, excluding 40-hour Employees, shall receive a food allowance in the sum of $1210.00 payable on the annual anniversary of each Employee.

Uniform Allowance

Each uniformed full-time Employee shall receive a uniform maintenance and replacement allowance in the sum of $800.00. A uniform account will be established in the amount of $800 per Employee per year.

Longevity

Upon completion of five (5) full years of employment, an Employee shall receive $500.00 in longevity pay with an additional $100.00 per year thereafter for a total maximum not to exceed $1,500.00.

Residency 

Effective April 1, 2023, all bargaining unit members, shall not be required to establish or maintain a residence located within the boundaries of the Charter Township of Washington.
