In the spring and summer, you will see our off duty fire department personnel maintaining the hydrants within Washington Township.  The spring/summer maintenance consists of painting the hydrants and weed control around the base of the hydrant.

We often receive request from residents asking to paint the hydrant in front of their property and/or to landscape around the hydrant.   Although this makes the hydrants more attractive, national fire code prohibits planting or any obstructions within a three (3) foot radius of the hydrant.   As you may notice all our hydrants have a yellow base (easier to spot in the dark) and some have different color caps.  The cap color indicates the water flow for that hydrant.  Therefore, when asked if the hydrant can be painted differently and we say no, this is the reason why.
